Right Brain Kids Art - 7 Interesting Gratitude Crafts For Father Day Special

My daughter was asking me about present for Father Day. I was cracking my head to help my daughter to create some special gift while at the same time she can practise her crafting skills and her right brain creativity. Here I share the seven interesting gratitude crafts for Father Day celebration.

#1 Egg puppet
Prepare a few egg shell, colorful cotton, ice cream sticks, felt, PVA adhesive for felt, magic color or makers. First step is create the puppet hair by pasting the cotton on the top of egg shell. Cut the felt into different clothing shapes such as shirt, long pants and shoes. Then glue all the felt together to create the body. Join the egg shell on the ice cream stick using paper tape, and glue the ice cream stick with the felt created body.

#2 3D scrapbooking Father portrait
Prepare a few candid photos of dad, acrylic color, some sea shell, A5 size mini canvas and PVA adhesive. Color the mini canvas with acrylic, while letting it dry, sort out the sea shell that was collected from the beach. Once the canvas is dried, paste dad candid photo on the canvas, add different shapes of sea shell on it as natural designed embellishment. Then a father portrait scrapbooking is done!

#3 Father Day greeting card
Prepare a few colorful construction paper, marker, color pencil, clay and crayons. Ask your child based on his or her memories to draw daddy face on the construction paper. They can imagine daddy is eating favourite food or drink, reading newspaper etc. Ask your child to create daddy favourite food or fruits using clay, and paste them on the construction paper that drew with daddy face. Last steps is add some write on the drawing such as dad enjoy apple, or dad love reading newspaper, happy father day etc.

#4 Draw dad from memories
Prepare a A3 size drawing block, ask your child to draw daddy from his or her memories with the feeling of feeling gratitude to daddy. I believe this will be the most grateful drawing and gift to dad.

#5 Collage of Dad
Prepare a wooden based of A4 size, acrylic and some of daddy little personal collection such as air tickets, movie tickets, bus tickets, train tickets etc. Use acrylic to color the wooden based, paste the ticket collections on the wooden based. You can ask your child to help for pasting, does matter the tickets are paste in uneven shapes or style, the important thing is your child love and enjoy pasting it. Always encourage your child to make the decision on pasting. Finally do a photocopy of dad photo, and paste it at corner to create a unique collage design, write some text such as.

#6 Make a kite for dad
Hand made kite with daddy is another fun crafting activity for father day. Prepare rice paper, PVA adhesive, coconut leaf sticks, and poster color. First, find a suitable kite template from internet, print it and cut out the shapes on the rice paper. Then using PVA adhesive to glue coconut leaf sticks as the kite back bone. Let it dry for an hour. Lastly paint some abstract pattern on the kite with poster color, let it dry half an hour and your kite is ready to fly.

#7 3D Sculpture using paper clay
3D sculpture crafting is great for children imagination and creativity thinking training. Ask your child to source for the 3D sculpture material with daddy at the playground or park that near your neighbourhood. With the collections and paper clay, create a 3D sculpture of little dream house of daddy.
The most important awareness for our children while doing above crafts is the gratitude and love feeling towards dad. Hope you can create anyone of them for father day!

How to mix colors ?

How to Mix Colors

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Interested in learning how to mix luscious, vibrant colors? Have you ever mixed red and blue paint only to find you have "mud" instead of purple? Want to know how to create luminous shades of red and yellow? Now it's time to learn how!

Steps

  1. Learn by doing. Get out your paints and cut a number of 8" x 10" pieces of watercolor paper or primed canvas on which to try out all the following color mixing techniques. You will find these sheets a great reference tool.
  2. Understand the basic color wheel. If you don’t have one, get one. It’s loaded with good information and visually demonstrates the following:
    • Primary colors are yellow, red, blue. You have to start with these colors as they can’t be mixed from anything else. Hence the term primary.
    • Secondary colors are orange, purple, green. Yellow + red = orange. Red + blue = purple. Blue + yellow = green.
    • Tertiary A tertiary color is one that involves all three primary colors, red, yellow and blue. It is a muted color. Tertiary means three. Orange plus blue is a tertiary color because orange is red and yellow. Add blue and you have three the primary colors in the mixture. Blue-green is not a tertiary color because it only has blue and yellow. It is a secondary color. A lot of incorrect information about tertiary colors and what they are is out there confusing people. If you want to mix brown or gray or if you want to tone down a bright color with its compliment, that will involve all three primary colors. You will be mixing a tertiary color.

  3. Be aware that colors can be visually warm or cool.
    • Warm colors include yellow, orange, and red;
    • Cool colors include purple, blue, green.

  4. Create a color sheet of all your pigments, grouping like colors. Yellow can, be cool, just as a green can be warm, depending on the pigments used to make that particular color. Your color sheet will help you to become familiar with this concept. Paint a swatch of all your yellows, reds, blues, etc. It will become obvious whether a pigment is warm or cool by comparing it to the other swatches.
  5. Learn about complementary colors. This is key for two reasons:
    • Complementary colors, when painted next to each other, enhance one another and almost glow. Why do you think a red rose is so stunning? It's those wonderful green leaves making the red dance. Did you ever wonder why so many spring flowers are purple and yellow? Mother Nature knows what she's doing.
    • Most important - complementary colors, when mixed together, create a neutralized or grayed-down version of the original color. Alter the proportions to get blue gray, green gray, or purple gray; red brown, yellow brown, or greenish brown.

  6. Dull down colors that are too bright. When you have a blue that is too bright, you can dull it by adding a bit of orange. Give it a try. Take a dollop of blue and add a small amount of orange. Mix well and watch how the blue changes from bright to dull. Uh oh, are you getting a greenish brown? That's because you added too much orange, or the orange may have too much yellow in it. Yellow and blue make green, remember?
  7. Keep trying different color mixes. We know that it takes red and blue to make purple, and that yellow is the complement. Which red and blue do you choose to mix a bright purple? (HINT: NOT red with yellow in it.) Red and yellow make orange, the complement to blue, which will make a grayish purple and not a bright one. Got the idea? Give it a try.

Tips

  • Complementary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel. That's all well and good but what if you don't HAVE a color wheel in front of you? Here is a quick way to figure it out:
    • If you are looking for the complement to red, the two primary colors left are yellow and blue; mixed together they make green, which is the complement to red. The complement to yellow? Blue and red are the primaries left that, when mixed, make purple - the complement to yellow. Cool, eh?
    • What if you want to know the complimentary color to purple? Well - red and blue mix to make purple, the primary color left is yellow, which is the compliment to purple. TA-DA!

Warnings

  • Color Mixing Takes Time & The Highly Technical Marble Drop Theory
  • With all this information, consider the "marble drop" theory. Our brains can only comprehend so much information at any given time. When learning new techniques/methods, it is difficult to hold onto all these various tidbits. I picture them as marbles all lined up waiting to be absorbed. At some point you will think 'AHA! I get it!' and the marble will drop for that particular tidbit of information - you will no longer have to struggle with it. This makes room in your brain for the next pearl of wisdom.
  • Your art journey is a spiral. As you get each new principle, when you come back around to study, oh, say color again, you have the capacity for a higher-level of understanding.

Things You'll Need

  • Disposable paper palette (no messy clean up—I like it!)
  • Mixing knife or palette knife (any size will do)
  • Watercolor paper or primed canvas (there are pads available of both at your local art supply store; make sure you get actual primed canvas—not that paper stuff which I think is really icky)
  • Water containers for cleaning brushes
  • Synthetic brush of your choice (#8 round or #6 flat is good)
  • Spray bottle to keep paint moist
  • Paper towel for blotting and cleaning brush
  • Color Wheel
  • Paint colors as listed in following pages
  • (Also visit Golden’s web site listed below for color samples)and also remember to wear something that can get dirty!!!

How to train patient and creativity

This is how I train Selina patient and creativity.
While doing art I'm actually building Selina's foundamental of creativity and problem solving ability, by using below listed method :
1. observation skill
2. patient
3. focus / concerntration
4. never give up, retry and retry persistantly
5. day dream

observation skill
1. "look carefully" method
-> when go outing have a walk at part I always ask Selina to discover the grass leaf shapes by say "look carefully all the grass shapes are not the same, though from far they look the same color almost"
-> when travel in car or bus, I always ask Selina to look for upcoming vehicle, by say "look carefully the bus numbers, what is the bus number ?" "look carefully all the bus are painted with dfferent color and advertisement". sometime I ask her to observe what's the advertisement trying to message to public
-> alternative suggest to "look carefully" at the movie poster at cinema, I ask Selina to tell me what she understand story about the movie from the poster

patient
1. "wait" method
-> I'm not always react to Selina's request immediate, in order to train her patient

2. assign art task that need to use tracing method
-> trace shapes of bottles, various shapes toys, which also can train Selina's observation skills while patient to trace

focus / concerntration method
1. I train Selina's focusing on create toy truck
2. do rings art using beads and buttons, beads threading
3. pouring water from small cup to bigger cup, vice versa

never give up, retry and retry persistantly
1. art assignment that a little challenging for Selina
-> I try not to give Selina too much help, unless she request for or if she give up, I always say "try try again, I need your help to do". though it's breaken English, but this tone helps

2. conversation
-> when she requested or craving for raisin, I never give her immediate by ensure her requested me for at least 10 times, then I give her.
By using this method, when she try to avoid problems, I will recall to her that she is able to request raisin for 10 times, never give up, why can't she try 10 different method to solve her art creation problem.
-> I found this method is not fully effective sometime, due to tiring, I will let her decide her own in this case, either keep away the art stuff to let her take a break, cycling or lying on sofa day dreaming a while

day dream
1. lying on comfort zone
-> when I was child I love to day dream
-> Selina also like to day dream lying down on the sofa, looking at the blue sky outside windows. Sometime she will tell me raining soon, or sometime she will tell me sky like feather, rabbit etc
-> sometime she just lying quitely, I will give her drink some juice or water
